Chocolate Meringue Bars

3/4c. shortening
1/2c. sugar
1/2c. brown sugar, firmly packed
3 eggs, separated
1tsp. vanilla
1tsp. baking powder
1/4tsp. baking soda
1/4tsp. salt
2c. sifted flour
1 (6oz.) pkg. semisweet chocolate pieces
1/2c. flaked coconut
1/2c. chopped nuts
1c. brown sugar, firmly packed
Beat together shortening, white sugar and 1/2c. brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla to mix well.
Sift together baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour. Add to creamed mixture. Pat into greased 13x9x2 inch pan. Sprinkle top with chocolate pieces, coconut and nuts.
Beat egg whites until frothy; gradually add 1c. brown sugar, beating constantly. Beat until stiff. Spread over cookie dough in pan.
Bake in moderate oven (375) for 25 to 30 minutes. Set pan on rack to cool, then cut in 3x1 inch bars. Makes about three dozen
